When I started in the wedding industry over 8 years ago I wished for someone I could lean on to help me build what I was so excited about. I had just come from the entertainment industry which was insanely competitive and easy to get swallowed up in so I was ready to meet others like me and learn as much as I could. Little did I know at the time every industry can be competitive and and overwhelming. I quickly realized that it didn’t have to be this way and I had the power to change it.
Since I didn’t have a magic book to show me step by step what I needed to bypass early mistakes and save my time and sanity in starting a wedding planning business I started researching the industry as a whole and narrowed down what really didn’t feel great. I knew right away I needed to do the opposite of this so I started building my business backwards of how others had done it. The end result: a thriving bi-coastal wedding and event planning company that runs on love, trust and transparency, that in the first year had 18 REAL weddings with no advertising or paid marketing. I’m proud to say every year has been profitable and we have only grown by leaps and bounds.
Today there are many workshops and online courses that promise they can help grow your business. I’ve been to those workshops and I’ve spoken to those audiences. When it comes to business one thing I’ve learned is this: one size fits all does not apply to starting, running or building a business. I’m a big fan of workshops and classes because of the community you build and the encouragement you receive but realistically how many attendees head home feeling full of promise and hope to only realize they still don’t know the most important thing … “what do I do next?”
The truth is everyone has different goals at different times and your success can’t be grown simply by following the success of someone else. Doing your research, educating yourself and putting in the work on your own is critical to your success … but more important is having a partner. A partner who has been where you’ve been and genuinely wants to help you get where they are. I love being that person for others and it gives me the greatest joy to watch the growth and confidence happen before my eyes.
